Dear
Friends,
My mother
always told me that if you want say something, mean what you say and say what
you mean. My mother never had an issue speaking her mind about something. Same
goes with me as her child. Since grade school, we are taught in the U.S. that
we have the freedom of speech. Even if it is hateful, we all can speak our
minds without some punishment. However, in this world we live in, free speech
comes with more consequences now. People can sue for your hurtful comments and
some people have died from being bullied. Speaking your mind is a good thing
but it comes with dire consequences. I have never wanted to talk about this but
there are some things I want to talk about that no matter what should be said,
needs to be said.
The media
thinks they’re shielded from the backlash of free speech but they are not. I
find it appalling that people could get on television but have no common sense
when they speak about something. I believe in protesting but some people go to
great extremes to make a simple point. The media makes it a point to show
ignorant people who have the freedom to speak their minds but their beliefs are
construed and misguided. That pastor from Florida comes to Michigan to protest
the Arab community around Detroit. Why?
I said that
some free speech is hateful, that’s true. Groups like the KKK and other White
supremacy groups are covered in free speech. However, we all don’t have to
listen or put up with it. I might not have had the pleasure of seeing a KKK
rally, or some neo-Nazi group but simple farmers and men whose daughters like
black men speak their minds and share their views in the same way. Racism will
never go away but thank god we also have a choice in the matter.
Most of my
older relatives fought with civil right dignitaries to give me and others a
better life now. Free speech was covered but what the young kids say now is
pure ignorance. What upset me even more is when you have a kid from the ‘burbs
speaking like they are from the ghetto. Again, we have free speech but we also
have free choice. I might have lost my point in this entry but I want people to
know that free speech is a blessing but also a curse. Mean what you say but be
aware of the consequences of what you say. Words can get you killed now.
